So you want to be on the Member Advisory Board (MAB)?

So, you read about the MAB nominations and you think you might have what it takes to be a contender. What does it really mean to be a member of the MAB? Having visions of glitz and glamour? I spoke to Meret, a current member of the group, and he was kind enough to help me put together some information about the realities and obligations of serving as a community liaison. Read on to learn more…

The Member Advisory Board is a unique, granted partnership between the community and the company (There). It provides a forum for both sides to understand the needs, issues and challenges each face, while developing common goals to make this service and community a more enjoyable experience. As in any partnership, members holding positions on the MAB need to work *with* There, the community, and each other to achieve the desired change or progress.

Accepting an opportunity to be part of the MAB imparts an obligation to represent the broader community. This obligation means being open-minded and understanding about issues that impact some or all of your fellow members, even though these issues may or may not be things you agree with personally. At the same time, you must also take into account the goals, limitations and current directions of the company. Serving on the MAB brings with it the need to make time for other community members who need an avenue to express their ideas, issues and needs. The MAB is a time consuming volunteer organization for those interested in growing and improving our shared virtual world experiences.

MAB members are expected to particpate in the operation of the MAB and its functions. This involves attending meetings, aiding in focus groups and communicating with other members, as well as assisting in the preparation, planning, and operation of those activities. MAB members are commonly self-starters, leaders or involved community members with a strong passion to support and grow the community and service.

While MAB members have no authority or power, they do have influence and contact with There staff not commonly available to the general membership. The community has made it clear that MAB members must understand that this is a privilege -- one that must be respected and used for the purposes of the general community, not for personal interests or motives.

MAB members are expected to abide by the TOS and are no more accountable than any other member, although the general community expects that all MAB members will represent themselves and the MAB organization in a manner appropriate to the position they hold. While the concept of “being yourself” is what everyone hopes for, the reality is that community members (known or strangers) expect a member of the MAB to treat them and their issues/requests with respect and fairness *at all times*.

At its heart, the Member Advisory Board is about communicating the issues and desires of the general membership in an organized and professional manner, while working with There to support the health and growth of this community and service.

(Thanks very much, Meret, for your assistance with this!)
