There is a known issue with some versions of ATI display driver on Windows XP. This issue will often result in a Segmentation Violation that references "Fault in Module: ATIOGLXX.DLL", as well as very visible and obviously corrupt graphics rendering.
The OpenGL driver in these versions of the Catalyst suite has a statck corruption bug that results in the driver crashing, and taking There out with it. Vulnerable display drivers include Catalyst 4.11, 4.12, 5.1, and 5.2.
There are multiple possibilities to work around this issue:
1) Downgrade your video driver to a version which does not have this bug (Catalyst 4.10 is known to work well with There without this crash issue)
2) Upgrade your video driver to Catalyst 5.3, which has been reported by some members as not containing this bug. We have not fully tested this solution, but so far it seems promising.
3) Change There to use DirectX mode instead of OpenGL, using ThereTweaker.
To force the client into DirectX mode, please use ThereTweaker to manually set your rendering engine in There to DirectX mode:
1. Locate the directory on your hard drive where There is installed (e.g. C:Program Files There)
2. In your There directory, open the folder "There Client", then "Resources", then "dlls".
3. In the "dlls" folder, you will see a file called "theretweaker.exe". Clicking on "theretweaker.exe" will open a window where you can adjust the resolution and rendering engine.
4. Set Renderer to DX8 and apply changes.
You should now be able to log in without this Segmentation Violation crash.
