Overview of the Developer Program

If you have some great ideas for developing new There products, like clothing or vehicles, you may want to consider becoming a Developer. To be a Developer you must meet some fairly simple hardware, software and skill requirements:

Hardware Requirements
You will need a PC that meets the requirement for running There. In addition, you should have at least 256M of RAM.

Painters and Builders will need a paint program that can save files in the .jpg format. Examples include Adobe PhotoShop or Microsoft Paint.

All additional programs and documentation can be downloaded for free at our Developer website.

Skill Requirements

  • StyleMaker
Users with little or no design experience can use StyleMaker to create completely original clothing to wear or sell in There. Using StyleMaker, you can design, take a Snapshot, and submit your creation, without ever opening a paint program!
Advanced users can use StyleMaker in conjunction with an image-editing software (like Photoshop) to create completely unique designs.
  • Painter Tools
Users who are experienced with a paint program, like Photoshop, can create their own custom "paintjobs" for a variety of items, from HoverBoards to t-shirts!
  • Builder Tools
Builders should be experienced modelers and texturers and familiar with 3D modeling packages like Studio 3D Max. We use a version of Studio 3D called gmax that each Builder will need to download. In addition, you will need to have experience with a paint program, such as Photoshop.

Note: If you are not an experienced modeler, you should try being a Painter first.

Becoming a Developer
If you have read the Developer Agreement and have the appropriate hardware and software, you can become a Developer by going to Developer sign up. You will need to agree to the terms of the Developer Agreement, and then you will be allowed access to the Developer website.

Once in the Developer website, you can visit Downloads to get all the additional documentation and templates, and start creating products.

StyleMaker
Using StyleMaker is as easy as 1,2,3! Just follow these simple steps.

  • Step 1: Design
Start by clicking [CHOOSE ONE] from the menu bar at the top of the StyleMaker screen. Options will appear on the menu bar, allowing you to customize your design Part by Part. The next step will always appear on the menu bar as [CHOOSE ONE]. From the shape, to the texture, to the color, you decide exactly how you want your creation to look.

    Step 1b: Advanced Design (Optional)
If you are an advanced user, and would like to edit your texture using an image editing program (like Photoshop), you should read our [Advanced Tips] under the Help menu.
  • Step 2: Snapshot
Once your design is complete, use the File menu to [Zoom In] on your design and take a [Snapshot]. Make sure that your design fills up the entire window before taking the snapshot. This snapshot will be used as a catalog image to display your new design in There.
  • Step 3: Submit
Use the File menu option [Submit to There] to submit your product to There. [Submit to There] will open up a small window in which you will enter a product name, description and choose a catalog image. After you click "Ok," you will go to a pre-filled submission page on the There Developer website. If you are happy with what you see, just click "Submit" and you're done!
Creating products (Advanced)
There are two different kinds of products you can create: new paintjobs for existing objects or a brand new model that you can paint. For help with StyleMaker, please see our separate help topic, above.

Objects you can paint include: Clothing (pants, shirts, tank tops) , Furniture (chairs, couches, stools), or Vehicles (Buggies, HoverBoards).

Models you can create include: Buggy, HoverBoard and flora.

Painting
To paint an object, you must first load one of the templates that we provide into your paint program, paint it the way you like, save it, and then open it up in the provided Previewer. The Previewer is a special tool just for viewing your work in 3D as it will look while in There. You will also submit your items to There through the Previewer.

Building
To create a model, you must first build the model and then paint it as above. Start by loading one of our models into gmax, modify it so that you like it. Texture the model to give it a great paintjob - this is the hardest part of the process and should not be undertaken except by the experienced or the extremely patient and persistent. Once you have textured the object, it can be loaded into Previewer, and you can submit it to There.

Pricing
To make your product available, you must first submit the product for approval. Once approved, you can request the number of your products you would like made. There is a one-time set up charge you must pay when your product is approved and then a per-unit cost for each product. The per-unit cost is about the same price as the cheapest version of the same product in our current catalog - the set up cost is about 10 times that amount. For example, to make 10 t-shirts just for your friends will cost you about twice what a cheap t-shirt would cost that came out of our catalog. The price list for each product is available in the Developer Manual available from the Download page.

Submitting
Once you have your textures or models ready:

  • Select [Submit to There] from the StyleMaker menu or the Previewer menu (for Painter and Builder items)
  • In the window that will appear, enter a product name and a short description for your item, select the catalog image that you would like to use, and click "Ok."
  • This will bring you to the submission page on the Developer website, and all of the information needed to submit your item should be filled in for you.
  • If you're happy with what you see, click "Submit" and you're done!

Note: All images should be .jpgs, and product names should not contain quotation marks.

Approval
Within about 1 week for Painter and StyleMaker submissions and 2 weeks for Builder submissions, you will receive from There either approval (so that you can order your new product), or feedback on what needs to be done before the product can be re-submitted.

Ordering
Once your product is approved, you can either order products immediately or put one up for auction. Products you order immediately will appear in your My Things menu.

Selling
Products in the My Things menu may be sold to people directly - just find a buyer and agree on a price. You can also have your product automatically listed for you on Auctions. The money is automatically transferred to your There account. The auction listing will not be removed until you request it, so that potential buyers can always see it.
