Change your perspective on things by clicking the Views menu on the menu bar. You can get a front view of your avatar or a closeup of your face, or change to first-person view and hide your avatar altogether.

Zooming to different heights is a handy way to orient yourself. Choose Aerial View from the Views menu and you will see where you are in There from an above perspective as well as nearby people and places.
