Symptoms like very slow performance, Rubberbanding (snapping back when you try to move forwards), and errors like "Action Cancelled" when trying to log in, can indicate that a software firewall is interfering with your connection to There. Zonealarm, McAfee Firewall, Black Ice, and Norton Internet Security are all examples of software firewalls available on the market today.

To properly configure your software firewall, you will need to establish the following three rules in the firewall control panel.

These rules are:

1) "There.exe" needs full and unblocked access to the Internet, always. Software firewalls configure access on a per-application basis, and many people who have software firewalls have clicked the option 'never show me these alerts again' which comes up when an unauthorized application tries to connect to the Internet. To ensure that There.exe has full access, please delete any currently existing rule which says 'There.exe' is allowed to access the internet and allow your firewall to recreate it on the next login.
2) Outbound TCP ports 2311, 2313, 2315, 80 (HTTP), and 443 (SSL) need to be open and unblocked, always.
3) Outbound and Inbound UDP ports 2311, 2313, and 2315 need to be open and unblocked, always.

Please contact the manufacturer of your software firewall for assistance in opening these ports and establishing these rules if you are not familiar with how to do this.

Note that many software firewalls do not obey when you tell them to 'disable'. Zonealarm is the most common of these offenders. They will keep running in the background, even when you kill the controlling application. To work properly with There, a software firewall must either be configured to allow There access to the internet, or the software firewall must be completely uninstalled.

Hardware firewalls, like routers such as from D-Link, Netgear, and other companies, often do not interfere with There as the There client will try to establish a connection out on those ports first, which tells the hardware firewall that it should allow traffic through to your computer on those ports. 

Please note that if your Internet connection requires the use of an "HTTP Proxy" as most company networks do, you will not be able to use There on that Internet connection. There is not compatible with HTTP proxies.
