The Ins and Outs of IM Windows
One of the first ways new members find to communicate in There is with the IM window. Simply clicking a nametag gives you the option to IM (Instant Message) another avatar, and a window pops up with a box to type in. Avatars sometimes figure out how to talk in IM before they understand how to type in a bubble chat.
So... if it's all that easy, why an article to explain it? Well, there are a few IM tricks and guidelines that can make your There life easier:
- You can move from IM box to Chat bubbles and back by using the Tab key.
- IM windows usually keep scrolling the text. The box cannot be resized, so sometimes you will miss something if it scrolls out of the window before you can read it. Just grab the scroll bar and slide up or down to see what you missed.
- If you have more than one IM box open, the scroll on the unused box may stop. New text in the box causes it to flash and change color. If you see an IM box flashing orange, but you don't see new words in the box, chances are yours has stopped scrolling. Grab the scroll bar and pull down to the bottom of the window to keep current with the chat.
- URL's pasted into IM boxes will show the links and can be clicked to visit a website.
- Some funzones have built-in Zone boxes that operate much as IM windows. These are for the host of the event to communicate with you. You cannot close these boxes. While you can minimize them, you should keep an eye out for important rules and instructions.
- Some funzones do not have built-in Zone boxes, and the host may try to communicate with the group in the event through a group IM. If you want to participate in the event, it's a good idea to keep that group IM open and the scroll fresh.
- So how do you start a group IM? If you click People>IM you will get a chance to click on a box for everyone Nearby or perhaps all the buddies on your buddy list. The IM will go to everyone you have checked from your buddy list.
- Should you start a group IM? Be very selective when doing so, as some avatars find it invasive or annoying. Communicating with avatars in an event you host is a good reason for a group IM. Just saying "Hi" to everyone around you is probably not a good reason for a group IM.
See you in There!
